Spending a Day at Mt. Titlis

The very thought of Switzerland conjures a beatific image of snow-clad mountains, decadent chocolates and everything that spells luxury. Home to the majestic Alps, Switzerland is a travel enthusiast’s dream destination. You can unwind with romantic getaways, you can quench your adrenaline thirst and you can immerse yourself in the rich culture and culinary delights – Switzerland has it all!

Towering at 10,623 ft above sea level, Mt. Titlis is a haven for tourists from across the globe. Located in Central Switzerland, situated between the cantons of Obwalden and Berne, Mt. Titlis hosts the site of the world’s first rotating cable cars.

Getting there

Mt. Titlis is easily accessible through a network of trains from Lucerne, Zurich, Basel and Berne. Travelling through the idyllic foothills of the Alps via train is a breathtaking experience that you shouldn’t miss. Although you could reach Mt. Titlis by bus or car, as per your convenience, the train journey is the best way to enjoy the captivating panoramic views.

  • Train: A 2 hour 40 minutes train journey from Zurich, via Lucerne, will take you to Engelberg, from here, the base of Mt. Titlis is a 5 minute walk away. For those who do not want to walk, you can take the bus.
    Similarly, from Bern (2 hour 45 minutes), Basel (2 hour 40 minutes) and Lucerne (1 hour), there are plenty of trains that take to you Mt. Titlis.
  • Car: All major cities offer car rentals which are easily accessible. From Zurich, the base is about an hour drive, from Bern and Basel it takes two hours and from Lucerne it takes about 50 minutes.

What a day at Mt. Titlis will be like

If high altitudes scare you, don’t fret. Adventure sports and activities might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean you have nothing to do at Mt. Titlis. You can enjoy the picturesque mountain landscape, breathe in the fresh air and get lost in the mesmerising view. It’s a playground for snow – bring out the child in you by making snow angels or have a snowball fight!

For those who seek thrills know this, Mt. Titlis is the destination for skiing. Skiers throng to experience an exhilarating skiing adventure at this mount. Dubbed as the ‘paradise for skiing and snowboarding’, Mt. Titlis offers 82 kilometres of prepared slopes for downhill skiing and snowboarding. Also, you can give snow tubing and sledging a shot. There is always a first time for everything! Put experience aside because they have slopes for beginners.

One can indulge in an adventure at the Titlis Cliff Walk, which is Europe’s highest hanging bridge. At an elevation of 3,020 meters, this suspension bridge gives you a once in a lifetime view of the mountain range. Add, the Ice Flyer chairlift and you’ve made the most of your day trip!

Last but not least, a trip to Mt. Titlis is incomplete without a ride on the rotating cable cars.  This is an all-year-round activity open to tourists from dawn to dusk. The car rotates 360-degrees giving you a chance to admire the mountains in all their glory from a height of 3,020 meters above sea-level. Get your cameras ready to capture some stunning shots of the trip.

The best way to end the trip is by visiting the Illuminated Glacier Cave. The cave takes you through a 150-meter long tunnel down to 20 meters under the glacier’s surface. This is again, an all-year-round activity.

There is a host of all year-round activities that you can explore along with the seasonal activities that are best suited for specific months like summer and winter.  Some of the summer activities include hiking, biking, row boating, rock climbing and bungee jumping.

Since most of the activities depend on conducive weather conditions, plan your activities accordingly or seek help from local guides.

There are also plenty of shops and restaurants to keep you energised throughout the day.

Alas! Time does come to leave paradise

But, at the end of the day, you would find yourself relaxed and bewitched by the beauty and aura of Mt. Titlis. Yes, time does pass by, but this experience will stay with you forever.
